The three men gathered down by the lake. Adam still had the camera, and Justin held the spirit box in one hand and in the other an EMF reader to detect any fluctuations in the electromagnetic field. Wayne had the recorder for the EVP session.

EVP: Electronic Voice Phenomenon. Most people were familiar with the concept, catching disembodied voices that couldn’t be heard by the human ear, yet most people associated scratchy, static noise that could be interpreted a million ways. However, Justin had captured some EVPs in his time that were so clear as to be undeniable.

He nodded to Wayne to start recording then Justin turned to gaze out across the water again and said loudly, “Is there anyone here with us tonight? Bethany Johnson, are you here? Did you die at the lake? Is there a reason you’re lingering here?”

Justin paused between each question, giving the spirit time to answer. When he’d first started doing investigations, these sessions had made him feel pretty silly, but now it was old hat to him. Plus, he knew that some spirits wanted nothing more than a chance to be heard, to be acknowledged, so what might seem silly to others was actually a public service to those who were forgotten.

As he talked, he kept an eye on the EMF reader. A few fluctuations here and there, but nothing that suggested an unseen presence. After asking questions for a full five minutes, Justin stopped and nodded once again to Wayne who turned off the recorder.

“Should I go ahead and play it back?” Wayne asked.

Under normal circumstances, reviewing of the evidence would all take place after the investigation was completed, but Justin reminded himself that these weren’t normal circumstances. “I guess. Let’s see if we caught anything.”

The three settled on the ground, Adam keeping the camera running and periodically scanning across the water. Wayne played back the EVP session, and they all leaned forward to listen. Of course, when they were able to run the audio through the computer and listen with headphones, they may pick up some sounds they missed now, but as it was, they heard nothing. Justin asking questions, and only silence in answer. Wayne replayed it two more times, but the result remained the same. Nothing.

“Alicia’s great and all,” Adam said, “but don’t you think it’s at least possible that she just spooked herself?”

Justin thought about it for a moment then shook his head. “No. Ali is unnerved by this kind of stuff, but she doesn’t spook easily.”

He knew his wife, he believed what she told him, but truth was he needed to give anyone who said they had a personal experience the benefit of the doubt. As someone who had been investigating the paranormal for over a decade, he knew how skeptical people could be and how that skepticism could turn into hurtful condescension. If pressed, he was sure he could get Adam and Wayne to admit that they had had personal experiences before that weren’t caught on audio or video.
